Wing-pin Removal Tools
To avoid damaging the Shadow wing-pins, why not use a special tool to remove them. Simple to make.

PS: The hollow wing-pin is a 265mm long 5/8″ diameter aluminium tube, with 5/8″ steel ends pressed into it. The steel lower end is threaded (3/8″ x 16 UNC) to fit ‘slide’ tool.
Never bash the wing-pins out with a hammer!
Push tools - push from below
To remove the wing-pin:
  • Adjust the height of the wingtip support, so that the wing-pins are not taking any load
  • Insert the tool into the lower end of the wing-pin
  • Push up on the handle with your hand

Slide tools - pull from above
To remove a stubborn wing-pin, slip the ‘slide’ tool right down inside the hollow tube and attach it to the lower end. Repeatedly slide the weight upwards – each ‘impulse’ helps draw the wing-pin out. It's kinder to the wing-pin than hitting it out from below!

Threaded wing-pin 'slide' tool (Murray Hagen, NZ)
My B-D Shadow came with a wing-pin removal tool. It is a 3/8″ steel rod (440mm long), with a threaded end (3/8″ x 16 UNC).

The ‘slide’ tool screws into the wing-pin's threaded lower end.
Warning!
This tool weighs 840g - don't drop it on your toe.

Steel rod wing-pin 'slide' tool (Philippe Soulas, FR)
Philippe Soulas made his own slide tool out of 6mm rod.
The sliding weight is 30mm diameter and 90mm long.

The long rod goes right thru the hollow wing-pin and a nut/washer is screwed onto its far end.
